Mummy Munday: I Come Face to Face With Bastet!
Grampa Sam wuz heer the last kupple of sleeps. He is Mommy's Daddy. Thay went to the Dallas Moozeeum of Art to look at the King Tut eggzibbit. King Tut wuz jes nine yeers old when he became rooler of Eqypt. Thats a lot for a cat, but not so much for a person. He died when he wuz yung too, only rooling for 10 yeers. He wuz loved tho cuz he did lots of things the peeple liked. So when thay made him into a mummy and put him in a peeramid thay incloodid lotsa gold and toys and things for when he got to the Rainbow Bridge. It wuz verry intristing to see things so verry old.
Inside King Tuts toom wuz a seckshun deddicaytid to the cat goddess Bastet, protector of the pharaoh. As yoo know, cats were so loved and adored in Egypt that the punishmint for hurting one of us wuz reely bad. When a kitty went to Rainbow Bridge, even thay got mummyfied. But Mommy sed she wundered jes how good a job Bast did proteckting the boy king if he died at 19 yeers of age. A few yeers ago thay did a CT scan on his mummy to see if thay kood find out how he died. Now thay beeleeve he died from an infeckshun brot on by a broken leg. Mommy sed "How much yoo wanna bet he got tript by one of his cats!??!"
In the gift shop thare wuz a littel reproduckshun of one of the statyoos of Bastet. Mommy brot it home.
It is nice to meet yoo Bastet. I bow my hed to yoo.
Are yoo as tasty as yoo look?
Uh Oh. Maybe putting the bitey on Bast izzint such a good idea. It looks like Bast's hed has a creemy filling.

I think Bast is bedder off living on this shelf.
The peeple in Egypt bak then must haff reely revered the kitty to haff carved one so beautipussly.
I kood totally see me as a skulpchurr! Heck, I'm allreddy worshippt...

Ah I wish I had such a nice statue of Bast!

That's a lovely little Bastet statue Echo, we think you'd make a lovely statue too. When our Mum was little (9000 years ago) she was taken to see the Tutankamun exhibition in London. She still has the programme somewhere, she loved all things ancient Egyptian.

wow! Bastet is certainly the Goddess of kitties. that is how she knows we like cream cheese and filled herself with it.
I like the Egyptians and their theory on cat worship. I think my beans do too...until they shoo me off the piano.
I would like a statue of her! I hope that exhibit comes here.
We love your Christmas lights! pretty pretty.

It is here that Mut claims both the lion and the cat as sacred animals and at Karnak Bast is called the 'ruler of sekhet-neter', meaning Divine Field = Egypt. Here are also reliefs found which depict the King performing ritual races with four sceptres and a bird or an oar in his hands, before the statue of Bast.

Even a cat can need a friend. When a spirit and a Bastet come to an understanding, they offer each other a pledge of friendship. This rite seals that bond; while it has no mystic repercussions, it's considered a formal oath and is taken seriously by both parties.
