Mancat Monday: Mr. Echo's PSA
Mancats, Today I wood like to meow to yoo about a potentially life thretning meddicul condishun that kood strike innyone of us: urinary crystals, also known as FUS. (Feline Urinary Syndrome) While this can strike the ladies, it is much more common in mancats.
Sumtimes FUS can just be from an inflammation, but what is reely dangeruss is when crystals form in yur pee and git stuck in yur manwurks. It is possibul to get so blocked that yoo cannot use the litter bocks at all. Yoo push and push and kant pee! Not only duz it hurt, it meens yoo haff to go to the vet rite away.
Cats who have bad cases of it sumtimes git operayshuns that re rowte your works so you end up peein like a gurl!
I think it sownds horrible. So I thot we shood talk abowt it and be more informed.
The reezun crystals are a problem is becuz the deezyn of our mancat parts is literully piss poor. Thare is one part that has a ninetee deegree bend and thats a purrfeckt playce for crystals to colleckt. Thats why girls dont suffer so much from it. And sum mancats are more prone to this than others.
But good nooz! Thare are things yoo can do to redoose the risks of gettin a plugged willie.

1. Drink more water! Heer I am taking a nice long drink from the bloo glass on the tabil. This is nice fresh water so it makes me want to drink it. Mommy freshens it evryday. Sumkitties even haff fancy water fountins. But yoo dont haff to git fancy, yoo jes haff to drink!
2. Try to include wet food in yur diet. The idea is that it gits more water in yur system. The more water, the more yoo pee and the more yoo flush out yur manparts.
3. Look for cat foods low in magnesium. I jes recently switched to a new brand of stinky goodniss called Triumph. First I pickt it cuz it wuz delishus. Later I saw it haz low magnesium.
4. Go eezy on the fish. Sorry mancats, but too much fish makes the risk go up.
So heer's to yoo my furrends! Drink up yoo mancats, drink up!!

A very good and general post about crystals--particularly as there are several kinds of crystals that require different treatments--we know we had the cat with the rare kind... sigh.

Great article. We drink out of water glasses, too, the way Missy Blue Eyes and KC taught us. That is a beautiful blue glass, makes us thirsty just looking at it.
Thank you for such an informative, frank discussion.

Thanks fur da informashun Mr Echo, it's good to share dis kinda informashun so we all keep our manparts working like dey should. Well, except fur dat part dey do da snip snip to on purpose and for no good reason except to keep da populashun down. Oh, and it does reduce da rates of cancer in dem nuggets.

It's a good idea to raise awareness of this very important issue. Noone wants to end out peeing like a girl (except for girls).

Our OTCB had FUS. He had to have that operation and eat special foods too. He lived a very long life tho...

Mr. Echo, our brother Max at the Bridge had that disease, and he had to get roto-rootered to fix it. Ouch! We are lucky because we don't have that problem, and we love to drink water!

Hey Mr. Echo...this is really good advice. Because mom is owned by 2 mancats, she has read up on FUS and she makes sure we always have lots of fresh water and wet food.

A very important PSA you made! At our local shelter there was a cat who had to have that "re-routing" surgery. It looked very uncomfortable.
I had bladder stones. The vet tried to have me eat special food to make them dissolve, but they did not go away. I had surgery and they scooped them right out of my bladder! It was hurty. But before they knew what was wrong with me, I had to go potty all the time, in and out of the box, and my potty had BLOODS in it! They thought I had a UTI until they finally did an x-ray and saw all the rocks in there. ::shivers::

Very informative, I'll make sure Kavan reads it. He drinks lots of water, and like stinky goodness. Unfortunately, his favorite stinky goodnees flavors are all fish!

Thank you for a highly informative post, Mr. Echo! I will pass along this information to the mancats of my family. And Mom knew about the fish thing -- we eat chicken and turkey and beef flavors, but not much fish (except for occasional salmon treasts). We all get wet food, and the mancats are very good about drinking plenty of water.

Mom is always giving us fresh filtered and chilled water out of the fridge door to make sure we drink as much a possible! It is very important!

Mr. Echo, this was a very helpful post - thank you. Several years ago I developed a very large bladder stone and I couldn't use the litter box as you describe. I ended up having an operation to remove it. Since then we only get wet food and mom adds water to it usually, but she didn't know that about fish!

Echo that was a fantastic explanation of our tinkle problems! *giggles* I don't know why I'm laugin cause I'm on DM wet food which is a prescription that helps me with my sugar levels but also adds extra water cause there is a concern I may have crystals in my system. Mom loves your blue glass!!! I drink out of a big dog bowl so I can get my face down in it. You look so adorable sitting on the table. I hope you and mom are doing well! Sure do miss ya!
Love,
Uncle Toulouse
